BEST 3D Tower Simulator at London Heathrow Airport
Micro Nav has successfully supplied and installed one of the worlds
largest and most impressive Tower Simulators at London Heathrow airport,
the world’s busiest international airport, on behalf of NATS, the UK’s
world class Air Traffic Management provider, handling over 2 million
flights per year.
Micro Nav provided all of the ATC simulation and training software in
the form of their BEST product together with the project services and
system integration.
Our installation comprised of:

360 degree 3D visual tower simulator
-
10 projectors based on a 10m diameter cylindrical screen

overhead front projection with full edge blending
-
5 controller workstations
-
facilities for instructors and assistants
-
radar displays
-
information displays and communications
-
lighting control panels
-
6 pseudo-pilot positions
-
a system manager position to support the exercise runs
-
stimulation interfaces and customised emulations added including Nav
Canada electronic flight strip system, as is being introduced in the
new control tower, lighting control panel, ground movement display
and approach monitoring system
Simulator ground traffic automation and pseudo-pilot facilities have
also been enhanced to meet the operational needs of the current and new
Heathrow airport.
This high-tech simulator is not only used for conversion training but
also for testing new concepts and equipment. It covers all of the
changes scheduled for Heathrow including:

The simulation also covers:

any required traffic levels with emergencies and unusual situations

a wide range of weather conditions including reduced visibility,
rain and snow, plus day, night, dusk and dawn
Our system allows the eye point to be jumped into different working
locations including into aircraft and ground vehicles.
Integrated area, approach, tower and ground operations can be trained
and evaluated.
Powerful data preparation tools allow NATS to cover different aircraft
performance capabilities, traffic levels and operating conditions with
full recording and replay capabilities.

Micro Nav was the prime contractor. BARCO designed and supplied the
visual display sub-system. Rockwell Collins supplied their new EPTM-10
image generators with multi-channel synchronisation. They also created
the 3D visual models of Heathrow airport, the aircraft, the ground
vehicles and the special effects.
The New Heathrow Tower
The new tower was designed by Richard Rogers Partnership. At 87m it is
one of the highest towers in Europe. Construction work began in July
2003.
