BEST 3D Tower and Radar Simulator at

The Royal Netherlands Air Force

The ATC tower and radar simulators developed for the RNLAF by Micro Nav incorporate a number of attractive new design features.

Complete Tower Cab

The Air Force have built an ATC tower cab complete with realistic consoles and equipment, windows and through-the-floor access. The visual display screen is wrapped around the outside of the cab to give a continuous 3D view of the many different airfields for which training will be given.  The consoles used in the simulators match the attractive new designs introduced operationally by the Air Force.

360-degree Rear-Projection Cylindrical Screen

The out-the-cab panoramic view is projected from behind onto a continuous cylindrical screen. The special screen material gives high light transmission with good optical properties. The design avoids any shadows cast from within the screen and gives easy access to the projectors for maintenance.

High Performance Projectors

The new SIM 7 projectors are being used for a full tower simulator display for the first time. There are 8 projectors with full warping, matching and edge blending. They give higher resolution and brightness and have automated computer control.

Fast Airport Builder

The Air Force will be using the Micro Nav Fast Airport Builder to achieve savings in time and costs when creating and modifying simulations of the many airfields that they are interested in around the world. The tool allows them to create new visual models and to evaluate "what if" changes with realistic operations more quickly and economically than ever before.

Image Generators

The PC image generators use the latest 3D graphics cards to deliver smooth, real-time, high-quality images of aircraft, ground vehicles and all the features of the airfields and their surroundings. They give binocular views, the ability to change the eye point and special effects such as explosions, fire and thunderstorms. Training can be run during different times of day and night and in many different weather conditions.

Sound System

A multi-channel wrap-around sound system gives dynamic sound effects that are synchronised with the aircraft, animations and ground vehicles to add to the training immersion and cues.

Wireless Instructor Workstations

The instructors will enjoy the benefits of a new design of free roaming mini workstations and headsets. These allow them to move around and carry out their preferred method of teaching by looking over the shoulder of the trainees.

2K Radar Displays

The radar controller workstations include the same design of displays as are used operationally. They are 20-inch square with a resolution of 2K x 2K to give the same work space and interfaces that the trainees will use when they progress.

BEST ATC Simulation System

The BEST ATC tower and radar simulation and training software has been enhanced to include special features required by the Air Force to match their working environment and procedures. The advanced capabilities of BEST extended with the customisations will give the flexibility and realism that the Air Force need for their current and future training plans.
